Beside the seaside

Horned Poppy September Norfolk

Growing out of pebbles, no soil at all. Glaucium flavum or Horned Poppy because the long seed pods are like horns! When the pod is broken open each seed is nestled in its very own compartment, very neat! It’s a perennial which I shall try from seed and keep on very poor soil.

Sea Aster September Norfolk

Aster tripolium, Sea Aster, a perennial, seen here growing in the salt marsh behind the shingle beach. Grigson suggests that this plant was taken into cottage gardens prior to the introduction of the Michaelmas Daises that came from the US. He quotes Gerard as calling this ‘lank and rank’ in gardens, which happens to quite a few wildflowers when fed too well!
